How to Custom-Make Suitable Carton Packaging

2024-01-26

Custom-made cardboard boxes typically require specifying the following seven items:
  1. Determine the dimensions: The dimensions should be specified based on the size of the internal contents, cushioning materials, packaging method, and other relevant factors.
Cardboard boxes generally come in three sizes: internal dimensions (inner diameter), manufacturing dimensions, and external dimensions (outer diameter).
Internal dimensions: The internal dimensions of a carton refer to the maximum volume it can hold. These dimensions primarily take into account the size of the contents. If no cushioning material is used, the internal dimensions of the carton will be equal to the external dimensions of the contents.
External dimensions: The external dimensions of a carton refer to its maximum size after it has been sealed. These dimensions are primarily considered in terms of carton stacking and storage space utilization. At the same time, the transportation loading efficiency after the goods have been sealed should also be taken into account.
  2. Material Selection: Cardboard boxes are typically divided into color-printed boxes (offset printing) and plain boxes (watermark printing). Both color-printed and plain boxes come in various material combinations.
The material of cardboard boxes mainly involves two aspects: corrugation pattern and paper composition.
Common corrugated flute types include A, B, C, E, F, and G. There are also regional differences: in the southwest and northwest regions, the most commonly used flutes are B, C, and E flutes, as well as their combinations—such as 5-ply BC and EB flutes.
There are many different types of paper used for cardboard. The surface of the cardboard typically uses kraft paper, with commonly used basis weights including 120, 140, 160, 170, 200, and 230 g/m². As for corrugated paper, the commonly used basis weights are 100, 120, 140, and 160 g/m².
  3. Box Type Selection: The box type refers to the structure of the cardboard box. There are many different types of cardboard box structures; commonly used ones include butt-joint boxes, airplane boxes, fully overlapping flap boxes, top-and-bottom boxes, and handle boxes, among others.
  4. Determining the opening direction: For conventional cubic cardboard boxes, different opening directions result in varying material usage areas and thus different prices. Moreover, the opening direction also affects how the contents are packed and stacked inside the box.
We’ll use the commonly used matching carton (type 0201) as an example to illustrate how to select the opening direction.
  5. Printing Options: Depending on the customer’s specific requirements, cardboard boxes can be printed in color, single-color, or left blank without any printing.
Box printing is generally categorized into three types: watermark printing, offset printing, and pre-printing. These three printing methods differ significantly in terms of process and cost. Currently, watermark printing and offset printing are the two most commonly used methods in the logistics and e-commerce sectors.
Generally, watermarked cardboard boxes are commonly referred to as "plain boxes," while offset-printed cardboard boxes are commonly called "colored boxes."
Watermarks typically feature 1 to 4 colors; each additional color requires the creation of another printing plate.
The main difference in printing on offset-printed cardboard boxes lies in whether spot colors are used. The cost varies depending on whether the print job involves four or fewer standard colors or five or more colors (four standard colors plus spot colors).
For conventional logistics packaging, the printing method typically involves either watermarking or no printing at all. Only when a product is positioned in the high-end market, or when the packaging serves both as logistics packaging and sales packaging, will offset printing (color printing) be considered. Pre-printed cartons are generally used for large-volume products with a single specification, such as beer.
Regardless of the printing method used, if printing is required, customers generally need to provide the original file containing the print content.
  6. Forming Methods: The two commonly used forming methods for butt-joint cartons are gluing and stapling.
For small-sized cardboard boxes, adhesive bonding is typically used; this method is also essential when the contents are fragile and prone to scratches.
For bulky products or products that require particularly strong carton sealing, nail binding is a better choice.
  7. Minimum Order Quantity: The production of cardboard boxes requires prior production of cardboard sheets. Therefore, for cardboard boxes made from specific materials, a minimum order quantity must be met before customization can proceed.
There are two main factors that influence the minimum order quantity for cardboard boxes:
First, regarding the minimum order quantity for cardboard: Since cardboard is produced from roll paper using cardboard machinery, there is typically a minimum area requirement for orders; otherwise, the equipment cannot start production. Generally, the minimum order area ranges from 500 to 800 square meters.
Second, considering the issue of vehicle transportation, the quantity is too small, and the shipping cost exceeds the value of the product itself, resulting in excessively high shipping costs when allocated.
